If you had a quote or a trial from Lighthouse and came away feeling it was built for a bigger hotel than yours, you are not alone, and you are not wrong to want something else. Lighthouse is a strong product, ranked first of 35 rate shopping tools on HotelTechReport with 1,338 reviews (HotelTechReport, checked 10 October 2026). But a 10 to 60-room independent, priced by its owner, usually needs a published price, a fast start, guidance that assumes no revenue manager, a UK calendar and one place to work. That is the gap RatePulse was built to fill.
I run independent hotels on the Welsh coast and built RatePulse for them, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about Lighthouse below links to its source and was checked on 10 October 2026.
What does Lighthouse do well?
Credit where it is due. Lighthouse, formerly OTA Insight, is ranked first of 35 rate shopping tools on HotelTechReport from 1,338 reviews, and is rated first for small, mid-sized, large and enterprise hotels alike (HotelTechReport, checked 10 October 2026).
It covers a lot of ground. The vendor describes a platform for hotels of every size, from groups and chains to independents (Lighthouse). For independents it now sells a pricing tool with three plans, starting at €99 a month for pricing only, €129 a month adding channel management, direct bookings and payments, and €189 a month adding reservation management (Lighthouse pricing, checked 10 October 2026). That page names Mews, Cloudbeds, Oracle, Protel and Apaleo among more than 400 technology partners, with a two-way PMS connection.
If you run several larger hotels, have a revenue manager, and want the tool most of your peers already use, Lighthouse is a sound decision.
Where do a small hotel’s needs differ?
Take a 24-room hotel on the Welsh coast: around £110 a night midweek in autumn, £165 on a summer Saturday, 68% occupancy across the year, about 40% of bookings through online travel agents. The owner does the pricing on a phone at the end of the day. Five things matter more to a hotel like that than to a 300-room property.
Knowing the price before the sales call
Lighthouse’s rate-shopping product is listed on HotelTechReport as quote on request, and its pricing is rated below average for the category there (HotelTechReport, checked 10 October 2026). Its pricing tool for independents has public prices; its rate-shopping product is quoted. If the price is what you want to compare first, ask for the quote in writing.
Being useful in the first week
A small hotel needs the first useful answer in days, because the owner’s time is the scarcest thing in the building. Ask any vendor, us included, how many days it takes from signing up to the first price recommendation you would act on, and hold them to it during the trial. If the answer depends on an integration project, count those days too.
No revenue manager on staff
Much of the industry’s software assumes someone whose job is pricing: who reads a dashboard, builds a forecast and owns the strategy. In most 24-room hotels that person is also on reception, checking the breakfast order and answering the phone. The tool has to say what it thinks you should do on a given night, in plain English, and why.
The UK calendar and your town’s events
Bank holidays in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland do not all fall on the same days, school half terms vary by county, and the night a band plays the nearby arena can fill every room in town. A small hotel wins or loses its year on a few dozen nights like those, so the tool needs to know them for your town, not just for your country.
One workspace instead of several
Larger hotels run a stack: a rate shopper, an RMS, a parity tool, a review tool, a business intelligence layer. A small hotel does not have the time to log into five systems. It wants competitor rates, its own demand, events, reviews and parity in one place.
How does RatePulse answer each?
The price is public. Our plans are listed on this page and on the pricing page, in pounds, and the 14-day trial on Pro+ needs no card. You know what it costs before you speak to anyone.
Nothing to install. RatePulse works without a PMS and is sharper with one. You find your hotel, confirm your competitors and see the market the same day.
It recommends, in words. For each night you see a recommended rate and the reasons behind it: what competitors are charging, how your bookings compare, what is on in town. Pulse, the AI assistant, answers questions from your own numbers, such as “why is the 14th busy?” or “what did we charge last half term?”. The decision stays yours.
UK and Ireland first. The calendar knows the bank holidays for each UK nation and for Ireland, and the events that move your town are on the same screen as your rates.
One place. Competitor rates and availability, demand and occupancy signals, events, room-rate recommendations, rate parity across your sales channels, guest reviews and day-to-day operations sit in one workspace, and small groups of 2 to 10 properties can switch between hotels without a second login.
If the vocabulary is new, the glossary covers rate shoppers, revenue management systems and compression nights. For a wider view, our comparison of rate shopping tools for small UK hotels covers six other options, including two automated pricing tools.
When should you stay with Lighthouse?
Stay with Lighthouse if you run a group or a hotel of 200 rooms or more, if you have a revenue manager who already works in it, or if your other systems already connect to it and the setup is behind you. Stay if you want a system that sets prices for you rather than one that recommends; RatePulse does not change your rates on its own. Stay, too, if your hotels are outside the UK and Ireland, where our calendar and support are not built to help. And if your team simply knows it and trusts it, switching has a cost of its own. A tool your staff use every day beats a better one they ignore.
How do you decide between them?
Run them side by side for two weeks on the same competitor list and the same nights. On three days, check a few competitor prices by hand and compare them with what each tool shows. Pick one event night and see which tool made it obvious first. Time your weekly price check with each. Then put the written Lighthouse quote next to our published plans and ask which one paid for itself.
On our 24-room example, raising five busy nights by £15 and selling the same rooms is £375. That is the scale of gain a small hotel should expect a tool to find in a month, and the yardstick to hold either price against. Our guide on how to price hotel rooms sets out the weekly routine that makes any tool pay.
If you would like to run that test, you can start a 14-day trial on Pro+ and set it beside your Lighthouse trial on the same nights.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lighthouse too big for a small hotel?
Not necessarily. It serves hotels of every size and sells a pricing tool aimed at independents. Most of its reviews come from hotels of 100 rooms or more, though, so check that the plan you are quoted fits a hotel that prices its own rooms without a revenue team.
Does Lighthouse publish its prices?
Partly. On 10 October 2026 its pricing tool for independents showed plans from €99, €129 and €189 a month on its own site. Its rate-shopping product was listed on HotelTechReport as quote on request.
Can I use RatePulse without a PMS?
Yes. There is nothing to install and it works without a PMS. Connecting one makes the occupancy and pace figures sharper, because they then come from your own bookings.
How should I compare the two fairly?
Run them on the same competitor list and the same nights for two weeks, check a few prices by hand, and time your weekly price check with each. Ask Lighthouse for its quote in writing so you are comparing like with like.
Does RatePulse change my rates automatically?
No. It recommends a rate for each night and explains why, and you decide. If you want a system that sets prices for you, an automated pricing tool will suit you better.
